In the past few years there has been a significant change in Walworth. More and more people are coming out of the closet and proclaiming their affection for, and pride in, the area. Maybe it is in response to the regeneneration, where the original plans seemed to suggest that ours was a neighbourhood without much going for it. We were stung. Nowhere did the plans mention Manor Place Baths, Pullens Yards. I’m not even sure that the elegant St Peter’s Walworth was cited.
Anyway. There are now a number of local groups; friends of this and that; the Walworth Society.
This coming weekend there is a special local history event in East Lane (yes, I know the A-Z says it’s East Street, but it is known as East Lane locally, its old name, or simply, the Lane) where Charlie Chaplin, one of Walworth’s most famous sons, claimed he was born.
There is going to be a pop up shop, opportunities for people to tell their memories and stories. Its an area where people talk a lot, so oral history is peculairly appropriate.
